marc... i've been on this blog for a couple of days now with my updated gmail account... i dont know why you can't see me there.
zack... just a couple of thoughts i had while your project was being discussed -
a. i don't know if this really exists, but one of the comments made me think of these "weeping widow" services i've seen in cartoons where you hire someone to show up at your grave after you die and mourn for you so other people visiting the same cemetery would think you have a loved one still caring about you. the gridded structure that you created would sort of become a free weeping widow service for everyone because from the outside you really can't tell who the visitors are there to mourn. They would be surrounded on all sides by these bodies and disappear into the structure- all you would hear is a gentle sobbing.
b. the question about whether the island would still be used to bury the jane doe's and the homeless raises another issue about the cost of burying bodies these days. i've heard that it costs a pretty penny to hold a funeral service and buy a spot in the cemetery... and i could imagine someone paying a premium for this synaesthetic grave site getting pretty upset that a homeless person gets to be buried right next to his loved one. maybe this is something you could look into? shrug...
