APPEARANCE-DISAPPEARANCE OF THE OBJECT
CLOSURE-THE VOID
CREATING A MOMENT OF PAUSE:
FROM THE BEGINNING, I HAVE TRIED TO ENTER THE (FEELING) OF SYNESTHESIA THROUGH AN OBJECT. ASKING THE QUESTION OF WHAT APPEALS TO THE EYE?, AND HOW DOES ONE SHIFT FROM THAT MOMENT, AND FEEL THIS EXISTENCE THROUGH THE SENSE OF TOUCH AND FINDING A PART OF HERSELF WITHIN THAT OBJECT.. IN THE FIRST ASSIGNMENT, I WANTED TO EXPRESS THIS IDEA OF APPEARANCE AND DISAPPEARNACE THROUGH THE RAILING,, WHICH HAD A MOMENT IN ITSELF (THE KNOT) FOR THE THUMB, A PLACE WHERE ONE COULD TRACE HERSELF..
OBJECTS AS BOUNDED- "HORIZON"
LOOKING AT SHIRIN NESHAT'S SHORT FILM'S SHOTS OF TOOBA, I SAW THE FEELING OF DISAPPEARANCE WITHIN AN OBJECT. A TREE, SURROUNDED BY AN ADOBE WALL, AND A WOMAN WITHIN THAT TREE, WHERE SHE COULD FIT JUST PERFECT. I WAS AFFECTED BY THE IMAGE, BECAUSE IT WAS EITHER SHE REALLY DISAPPEARED OR THE TREE DISAPPEARED, AND SHE WAS VEILED FIRST THROUGH THE ADOBE WALL, THEN THE TREE..BOUNDRIES WITHIN BOUNDRIES.
AS DAN WAS SAYING, THE IMAGE ITSELF CARRIES THIS IDEA OF THE HORIZON, AND AGAIN THE VEIL OR THE WALL , THERE IS A CERTAIN DIALOGUE WITH WHAT THE WOMAN SEES AND HOW WE SEE THE WALL..
GENDER:
IN SHIRIN NESHAT'S WORK, THERE IS ALWAYS A SPERATION OF WHERE WOMAN AND MAN ARE. WOMAN PRESENTS THE PRIVATE SPACE - THE VEIL BEING BLACK , AND THROUGH A CUT , SHE SEES THE WORLD. SHE IS ALREADY BEHIND WALLS.. ROOMS..
ON THE OTHER HAND THE MAN, IS THE PUBLIC SPACE WHERE, HE IS ALWAYS WEARING WHITE. HE IS THE IDEA OF SURVEILLANCE. I MIGHT TAKE THIS IDEA OF GENDER FOR ALSO THE SITE..
ALSO, FOR ME JOHN O'REILLY'S WORK IS AN INSPIRATION FOR SEEING THINGS IN DEPTH. OBJECTS PUSHING EACH OTHER, BECOMING THE OTHER. THERE IS DISTURBANCE IN THE METHOD, AT THE END THEY ARE LIKE LINEAR EVOLVED HORIZONS.
SELF ASSIGNMENT:
WHEN I THINK OF CITIES THERE IS ALWAYS SOME IMAGES THAT COME IN TO MY MIND. LIKE HOW ONE ENTERS TO THE CITY, WHAT DOES ONE SEE OR VISUALLY TOUCH, THERE IS A MEMORY OF THE OBJECT WE ENCOUNTER VISUALLY ,OR FROM DISTANCE WE EXPERIENCE. SOME CITIES HAVE FORTIFICATIONS, SOME CITIES HAVE MOSQUES, BRIDGES...IN NYC; FOR ME THE SKYLINE IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT.I WANT TO CREATE SUSPENDED HORIZONS WITHIN THE DRAWING.. HORIZONS OF STAIRS, ROOMS, DOORS, AND OBJECTS:CONNECTED TO EACH OTHER.LINEAR AND VERTICAL, PLAYING WITH THE IDEA OF REVERSALS,, THE SKYLINE WOULD HAVE THIS STRUCTURE THAT EITHER APPEARS OR DISAPPEARS WHEN ONE'S GAZE ENTERS THE CITY ..A JOURNEY WITH IN SUSPENDED HORIZONS..

Delal,
I think the horizon/skyline idea is a great idea. one example that immediately came to mind for me was diller and scofidio's blur building. In one of their preliminary designs, they wanted to have a restaurant where the observer would look out a window and the lake would be at eye level. Just an example of what "horizon" can mean. Also, the higher you are, the further away the horizon actually is. If you put your eye to the ground, New york looks a little different than it does from the empire state building or Randall's island (complete view of skyline). Is there a way to some how incorporate these ideas of skylines/horizons of different scales into a drawing?
one final thought. I know that James Turrell is doing a massive project made out of a natural crater. I don't know too much about the project, but when it is complete, it will completely block out the horizon, which he says, will allow you to see the sky as a dome. this is interesting because although you are outside, their is an inside created through the loss of horizon...
just a few thoughts...
"A PLACE WHERE ONE COULD TRACE HERSELF...
AND FEEL THIS EXISTENCE THROUGH THE SENSE OF TOUCH AND FINDING A PART OF HERSELF WITHIN THAT OBJECT...

can you talk about these relative to your horizons?

you may find this interesting...
