Reflection and stillness vs. motion

Film Intentions:
My site is the rooftop of a building in downtown Manhattan(gold street).
The main idea is to incorporate the reflection of the elements on the rooftop into the view to give a feeling of
surrealness and dream. According to Robin Evans, “The unusual effects of reflection are disruptive and confusing.”
I also wanted to show that a view can seem still but when you look closer there is movement.
What I am interested in is the juxtaposition of things, when the reflection of the structure becomes incorporated into
the building, it is transformed into something much more complex. “reflections break up the calm and isotropic space
of ordinary perception”
Or, when it becomes part of the horizon and is reflected in the sky. It creates a structure within a landscape.
At night the trees are reflected into the view with all the lights of the buildings, they look like they are hanging from
the sky. This creates a surreal setting. “The virtual and the real become hard to distinguish.”
A very interesting aspect of the film is the way views can be framed, looking out the window of the structure
makes the view confusing, hard to understand and the overlap of things looks fake, however,
when the view is taken showing the context and the struture then the secret is revealed. “ Mirrors can destroy coherence
but they can also reveal it.”
In a way it relates to Mary Miss’s installation, you can experience the structure diffently from every angle,
however when you get to the right frame you can see the overlap of the voids in the bilboards and see the sunset.
What becomes my main focus now is the way things can reflect on each other and create different effects as well as the
juxtaposition and the overlap of these elements which can generate different conditions.
The idea of framing scenes also relates to Tarkovsky’s technique of taking stills which are framed in a specific way
in order to create a painting like images. His way of framing and filming certain elements give a feeling of
surrealness and estrangements. He also uses trees and clouds as very powerful elements.
Tarkovsky also uses the technique of mirroring a lot which influenced me in my film, I tried to pick up the elements
that were mirrored onto the facades of the buildings as well as the ones onto the reflecting glass wall of the rooftop.

Interventions (Art Installations)
-A structure is reflected onto a building and overlaps the building’s elements (windows).
This creates an intallation that combines the overlap of the two and uses windows as openings.
-A Structure is reflected in the sky. The intervention expands it so that there no longer a horizon or ground
line. The scale of this structure is surreal compared to the size of the buildings. It overtakes the image.
-Using a source of light that is reflected and the dark spots of the image, I created a pathways from dark to
light. Dark becomes attracted to this artificial light and creates a sort of “tunnel” that lead to it

3- Possible Program
Residence for Artists/Hotel for art lovers, collectionneurs
Reflection can be almost a perfectly mirrored image but can also be very diformed.
The artist creates work which he is goingto transmit, the mirror sends back the image and perceives image with
a different point of view.It can be perceived as a different image depending on who is looking at it.
The hotel guests become the mirrors.
The idea is to create some spaces for interactions between the residents and the visitors; gallery spaces, cafe...
The residents being the stable part of the program and the hotel guests being the movable part (Stillness vs motion).
The guests reflect the residents by their temporary perception of their art but also by their fragmentation(hotel
rooms, small spaces).
Reflection woud not only be present between the two programs but also in each one of them.
Each room in a hotel is similar,it is the reflection of the other, however it is perceived differently by the person
who inhabits it. The Artist studio and residences would all be similar and reflected in a way but one inhabited would
start having their own personnality and be perceived differently.

-Notational Drawing (model)
First attempt at understanding and analyzing reflection. Reflection can be repeated to infinity. It can be continuous.
It can be perceived differently, It can show different aspects. It can be framented.....

you should diagram the techniques you describe regarding your installations...potential performative techniques.

what are you really after? moreso than your desire to create this surreal dream...how may you address (calibrate?) the other senses with this visual perception?

marc said...

what are your other possible programs?

“The unusual effects of reflection are disruptive and confusing.”...yeah? this is a kind of generic statement...he says a lot more...go on...

what are the window tubes doing? your intervention?(blue and green i think)

you are materializing the image...ok...towards what end?
