maze

The labyrinth is the mind.

The Labyrinth

The idea of being in the labyrinth physically also coincides with the idea of mentally being in one. To physically be in a labyrinth, a person is in a complex that is composed of a series of turns and dead ends. The complex is usually tectonically similar, to cause disorientation. The maze can be seen as confusing, frustrating, and fascinating. The person is forced to make decisions about which turns to make and which path to follow. Inside the maze, you understand that you must walk and every once in while, choose a direction. However, the God’s eye view completely changes that. You see the maze in its entirety. You can see all the possibilities, no outcomes are edited out. This begins to start a feeling of chaos.
The feeling of chaos also occurs whenever you look at something and start seeing multiple possibilities. In Borges’ “The Garden of Forking Paths”, Borges explains a novel that was written so that you can see all possible outcomes. A similar idea is seen in split screens of certain movies and multiplayer video games. The viewer is allowed to see what is going on in different parts of the same world, but can usually only follow one screen. Otherwise, the sounds and the visuals begin to blend together to cause disorder. On the contrary, a single perspective allows the person to focus on whatever decision they need to make. They can focus on their direction and each decision that has to be made. In a maze, a person becomes lost and the journey becomes about the experience.

Program #1 Market

For this program, I would like to use one space for a program that varies throughout the day. That way you begin to have different occurrences in the same place. For example, in the morning, a farmer’s market would occur, while later it can turn into an artisan’s market and then into a food/drinking market. Each of these smaller programs would also change the space, turning it into a space that changes depending on what is occurring within. The different programs would affect each of the senses differently.

Program #2 School

This program would be a hybrid of an elementary school and a university building. Both would have their functions occurring generally during the day, with some night functions. This program would show different possibilities at the same time. The different possibilities would be provided by the inhabitants. Elementary students are smaller, requiring shorter tables, toilets, windows, etc. This is an entirely different way of seeing the world as oppose to a college student, who is taller.

Program #3 Aquarium/Marine Biology Institute

This program looks at the idea of combining two programs which both deal with the same subject, however have a different way of doing so. An aquarium allows people to walk through the space and decide which exhibits to look at. It is more of a free way of moving through the complex. The Marine Biology Institute provides a lot of movement as people go through the space; however it is not as free form. People move with a purpose, as to complete whatever task is given to them. Their decision process is more guided.

Program #4 Agricultural School/Greenhouse

This program focuses on the changing conditions that can be seen in the outdoors. By filming my movie outside, one can begin seeing the changing conditions of the maze, such as different light, edge, and overhead conditions. These same conditions can be seen in a greenhouse. The plants, animals, and water go through a cycle, which provides an ever-changing atmosphere. The school provides for a hands-on approach when people will always be passing through the space; both looking, and studying.

Program #5 Transportation Hub

This program provides the connection of different types of transit (i.e. train, bus, ferry). A person in this program, must walk along a certain path to get where they are going. The path will continue splitting, until a person reaches their destination. If a person happens to walk in the wrong direction, they would be forced to back track. Decisions are usually made based off of signage in these places, but could also probably be guides with light vs. dark and uphill vs. downhill.

what i basically took from everyone's presentation of their programs was that programs you experience on a daily basis are actually stronger in regards to the senses. you can experience the program more, so you experience the different senses more. so, i'm crossing out the aquarium/marine biology institute based on that. i would go to the aquarium maybe once a year when i was a kid. i feel i should do something thats sensual and that ties in really well to my movie so far. is that on the right track?

the two main ideas from the movie would be forking and walking straight. the idea of forking, is an actual fork in the road where the person makes a decision, or a fork where a person can see multiple possiblities at once. when the person is walking straight, its about continuing in the same direction and walking in those boundaries (which can change, as the film showed...) i still need to think more on this.
