Mid-term notes

Very strong connection with the sculpture because the sculpture let the sculpture speak for itself.
Illusionistic space
dealing with perception-the perceived field
showing a way to see more minimalism
Great reflections let the piece be about itself
the program link is a little weak try and deal with something that you are interested in
let artists work allow something to happen.
way you're dealing with reflecton is very effective enhancing the field
Everyday architecture-reflections of interior light
nice coincidences -utilize them
how is what you're going to do (What you've found) any different from Barcelona Pavillion.
Abstract expressionist manner (with relation to the film)
new perceived reality was created when you filmed the hallway.
Drop the word surreal-the dream
This thing can't just exist in the mind
you're entirely priviledging the retinal experience
deal with the concrete spatiality
However perception isn't entirely visual
You've made a cylinder without a from- great
Walter de Maria- W. Broadway-Broken kilometer
The eye symbolic - what was your intention there?
reflection is confusion?
Surrealism could actually be very clear- chaos after the world wars

Artist- program is a problem because:
don't want to walk into a condition, a set one artists want to walk into nature.
program- port authority?
a normative program
the subject of the program should no be art
There is a need for internal logic.
Taking fragments of an existing typology.

here is what i had written about my program: ( i know that the comments during my midterm review weren't very favorable but if possible i would really like to keep it...)Possible Program
Residence for Artists/Hotel for art lovers, collectionneurs
Reflection can be almost a perfectly mirrored image but can also be very diformed.
The artist creates work which he is goingto transmit, the mirror sends back the image and perceives image with
a different point of view.It can be perceived as a different image depending on who is looking at it.
The hotel guests become the mirrors.
The idea is to create some spaces for interactions between the residents and the visitors; gallery spaces, cafe...
The residents being the stable part of the program and the hotel guests being the movable part (Stillness vs motion).
The guests reflect the residents by their temporary perception of their art but also by their fragmentation(hotel
rooms, small spaces).
Reflection woud not only be present between the two programs but also in each one of them.
Each room in a hotel is similar,it is the reflection of the other, however it is perceived differently by the person
who inhabits it. The Artist studio and residences would all be similar and reflected in a way but one inhabited would
start having their own personnality and be perceived differently.

Program Description

1- Social and cultural mission
This program would support artists.
It will promote art in the area where it is built. It will create public spaces for the neighborhood (gallery and
exhibitions will be public) This will allow for the area to develop and be more animated and alive. It will create
a cultural structure for the surroundings.
It will allow for inter-artists connections/ meetings.
It will create an icon for the art world.
I will create spaces for special events. It will become a culture mix with the hotel structure allowing people from
all over the world to visit and interact through the same passion.
It will allow for financial movements (the buying and selling of art).
It will attract: Artists, Art Critics, Art Dealers, Art Consultant, Collectors, Auction House Experts, Museum
Professional: Directors and Curators.
It will give better chances to artists living in the building to get noticed and get feedback.
It will allow the collectors to get to know their artist better before buying their art.

2- Architectural spatial/tactile/sound....
The idea would be to play with materials to create a surreal space ( art is most of the time surreal)
How can you touch hear or feel art?
Light could create spactial surreal notions.
cold ( glass, steel, concrete...) vs hot (textile, plants, grass, rugs) materials.
Sound that could be used from the film; wind . Sound of water could also be used as a surreal and natural
elementas well as a reflective element.
Walls can become ornamented.
Reflection can be used as an aspect that you can perceive something that you can’t feel or touch.
Clouds and wind can be used from the film. The clouds create a cover and the wind blows to move the cloud and
uncover. This can create sliding elements where things can be hidden behind.
Tactile and movable sliding things: creates flexible spaces.
Materials that allow for sliding; with tranparency, opacity....

For my site,
I was considering:
Chelsea: around 24th and 11th street, which is where all the art galleries are and it is close to the water
or Bryant Park: because i like the location in the city and it was suggested that artists should be in contact with nature. ( i know it is very little nature but it could used in an interesting way)
