Notes from presentation:
metaphor is good

the part about the ovals (serra's misreading of architecture - Boromini's cathedral) - interests I've had in the Serra work is missing in rest of project

getting too literal with metaphor

Go back to Serra for inspiration
went linearly with Rear Window information

images are very 2D, too flat
otherwise totally solid

Serra isn't very easy to capture - it's very illusionistic
visual possibility

maybe Rear Window restricted the filming of the video a bit

The Ronchamp images have a lot in common with the Serra Sculpture
walls reminiscent to serra's walls

liked quotes from serra sculpture - go from there
Nice quotes from Rear Window "...what people oughta do is get outside their own window and look in for a change." - possibilities there

maybe work a bit more conceptually with the film (rear window material)

The program in this case works - it's an institution
it's an organization with an agenda

Light is a huge part of the work - the program

What do you do with the windows?
the window gets challenged

Refining Program Assignment:

1. Statement of the social and cultural vision/mission of their program. This is a statement of its values and purpose in a larger sense:

The International Arts Movement (IAM) is an existing organization which aims to “gather artists and creative catalysts to wrestle with questions of art, faith and humanity in order to inspire the community to engage the culture that is and create the world that ought to be.” The vision of this organization is to use art to inspire change to help society to engage deeply in suffering and joys. Artists can act as a bridge between cultural divides, often giving society a language of healing and reconciliation. IAM empowers the growth of artists in the refinement of their gifts, in the fullness of what God intended for them. IAM fosters dialogue to anticipate and invest in what is to come.
Noted critic and artist Robert Kushner has written about IAM founder Makoto Fujimura’s art, “The idea of forging a new kind of art, about hope, healing, redemption, refuge, while maintaining visual sophistication and intellectual integrity is a growing movement, one which finds Fujimura’s work at the vanguard.” IAM is an outgrowth of the “forging of a new kind of art” and desires to collaborate with other influencers, empowering their work and growth. IAM artists strive to recover our call to create for the celebration of humanity under God.
The goal for a new building for the International Arts Movement would be to not only gather artists to collaborate in the arts and discuss these issues, but also to draw in and inspire the community around them. The goal would be to bring a new light to a community, to provide hope and inspiration, and shine new light on faith, God and art, and how they can relate.

2. A qualitative “description” of certain architectural spatial/tactile/sound etc. that they feel would support (metaphorically) the mission of the program. This should be related to their first film:

The program should be designed about light and windows. Reflection of not only light in the literal sense, but the reflection of the energy and inspiration of what goes on in the building onto the surrounding community. The light from the program should be welcoming to the community and inspiring. Light is a symbol for faith, hope, inspiration, peace, enlightenment and many other things. The idea of refection of light would be a metaphor for a person’s inner reflection on art, faith, themselves, and the world around them.

3. The student must also in addition, develop a quantitative program: What functions/activities are included in the program to fulfill its mission: how many people and what they do there and physical requirements:

The program would include gallery space for temporary exhibits. It would also include a performance space/auditorium which would be used for the performing arts including, dance, music, theater, film, etc. Large conferences could also be held here. The space would also include studio space for classes that would be open to the community and collaborative art projects. A Library and conference room would also be included for research and discussions.
